As part of the project “Evaluation of potentially new critical substances (choline, arachidonic acid, taurine, creatine) in a vegan diet”, the first English article on the long-chain omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid (ARA) has now been published in the peer-reviewed journal “Lipids in Health and Disease”.
In the review, Dr. Stine Weder, M. Sc. Sandra Müller, Dr. Christiane Dawczynski and Dr. Markus Keller investigate whether the amount of ARA produced in the body, especially in a purely plant-based diet, is sufficient to cover the body’s own requirements. For this purpose, they analyzed various studies that have published the intake and/or status of ARA in healthy adults and certain risk groups such as pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, children and adolescents. In addition to presenting the current state of research on the intake and status of ARAs in vegetarians and vegans, initial recommendations for action are formulated for these diets.
The English paper can be downloaded here for free. The recommendations for action in German can be found here.
We were only able to carry out this project thanks to your financial support. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all donors once again!
