As part of a research project, the IFPE investigated whether various substances that are predominantly or exclusively found in animal foods (“carninutrients”) should be classified as critical nutrients in a vegan diet. One aim of the project “Evaluation of potentially new critical substances (choline, arachidonic acid, taurine, creatine) in vegan diets” was to derive recommendations for action for the daily eating habits.

We are now pleased to announce the publication of our science-based recommendations on the long-chain omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid. The recommendations are aimed at people with a (predominantly) vegan diet, in particular at risk groups such as pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children and adolescents.

As a further milestone in the project, we have submitted an English article on the evaluation of arachidonic acid in a plant-based diet to a peer-reviewed journal. In doing so, we want to contribute to the scientific discussion and make a contribution to the well-founded evaluation of this fatty acid in the context of a vegan diet.

We are currently continuing to work on the recommendations for the other nutrients studied in the project: choline, taurine and creatine. Here, too, the focus is on systematic literature research, health assessment and the derivation of practical recommendations for plant-based nutrition.

We were only able to carry out this project thanks to your financial support. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all donors once again!
