Study design
The global increase in meat production and consumption is problematic from a sustainability perspective in many respects. Therefore, the aid organisation MISEREOR commissioned a study on instruments for managing sustainable and climate-friendly meat production. The study was part of a research project consisting of three studies for the MISEREOR working area “Climate Change and Justice”. One of the aims was to clarify how the European Union’s existing subsidy mechanisms in the sector of meat production affect sustainability indicators. In addition, solutions were to be developed on which regulatory measures (e.g. meat or feed tax, including agriculture in emissions trading) are suitable for making meat production more sustainable and climate-friendly. The study focused on pig farming in Germany.
